The Center's mission very much resonates with me. In 2008, my mother-in-law, Cathy, suffered a traumatic injury after a fall and spent some time in the ICU at our local hospital, then several weeks at a rehabilitation center. Thankfully, because of the excellent care she received, she recovered. I saw firsthand the importance of a holistic approach to treating traumatic injuries and providing a safe, high-quality patient experience. This is what the Stepping Strong Center at Brigham and Women's Hospital also believes in and delivers.
Cathy passed in 2016, two days before I completed the Chicago Marathon, my first World Marathon Major. I ran that race in her memory. For the 2025 Boston Marathon, I will be running my sixth World Marathon Major also in memory of Cathy. It is a fitting end to my WMM 6-Star journey. She would have been happy to know that I am giving back and showing gratitude and support to a community that provides so much, especially to patients who have sustained injuries similar to hers.
- Trauma is the number one cause of death for people 44 or younger, ahead of cancer and heart disease.
- Traumatic injuries comprise 40% of visits to emergency departments.
- More than $2 trillion per year is spent on decreased productivity, work loss, and medical costs due to traumatic injuries.
- Despite the significant burden of trauma, less than 2% of federal funding is allocated toward trauma research, inhibiting our ability to understand how to prevent, treat, and improve recovery from traumatic injury.
Brigham and Women's Hospital is a proud partner of the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program.
