Why I Run for Stepping Strong
Standing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, Gillian Reny’s life changed forever. A senseless act of violence left her with devastating injuries, but the extraordinary care she received at Brigham and Women’s Hospital saved her life and her legs. In gratitude, her family established the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation, transforming tragedy into a mission to revolutionize trauma care, recovery, and injury prevention.
As a physician, I see every day how critical rapid, innovative, and compassionate trauma care is—not just for survival, but for rebuilding lives. The Stepping Strong Center unites clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and communities to fuel cutting-edge research, reimagine trauma care, train the next generation of leaders, and advocate for trauma survivors and injury prevention. It is solely philanthropically funded, and its impact depends entirely on supporters who believe that better outcomes are possible.
My name is Salman Khan, and I’m running Boston 2026 to support this mission. I am an enthusiastic runner and community leader who helps bring together runners from across the world. My journey includes 30 marathons, 5 Boston Marathons, an Ironman 140.6, 100-mile ultramarathons, and high-altitude mountain climbing. Boston has always been close to my heart—not just as a race, but as a platform where running becomes purpose.
The Boston Marathon uniquely gives runners the opportunity to run for something bigger than themselves. By supporting my run for the Stepping Strong Center, you are helping advance life-saving trauma research, innovative recovery models, and advocacy for civilian and military heroes who have suffered traumatic injuries.
Together, we can honor the Boston Strong spirit—by turning resilience into action and hope into healing.
