During my junior year of high school, I suffered a traumatic ski accident in which I shattered my femur. I was rushed to Spear Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire where the doctors performed immediate surgery. When I woke up, I had a titanium rod and four screws holding my femur together. Prior to my accident, I was an avid cross country runner and freestyle skier, competing in both in high school. However, during my year of both physical and mental therapy, I wasn’t sure I’d ever do either again. Thanks to my amazing doctors and therapists, I worked through physical and mental barriers and can now proudly say I run and freestyle ski again.

Since I’ve gotten back into running, I have completed three half marathons and have been eager to complete a full one. My family and I were at the 2013 Boston Marathon during the bombing. When we returned the following year, I promised that one day I would compete in the Boston Marathon. That day is finally coming and I couldn’t be more excited and honored. I am so lucky and grateful that this is something I can do, and I want to run for all those who have traumatic injuries preventing them from being able to.

Since my accident, I am a strong believer in the prevention of injury. I attended the undergraduate program at the University of Vermont Nursing College studying Exercise and Movement Science. Countless of my classes studied the prevention, treatment, and recovery of traumatic injuries. The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation focuses on exactly that. Please read below to see the program I am running with and the mission I am running for.

Thank you in advance for your donation. Any and all are greatly appreciated.

Standing near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, Gillian Reny's life changed forever. A senseless act of violence left her with traumatic injuries, but the efforts of a multidisciplinary medical team at Brigham and Women's Hospital saved her life and legs. In gratitude, her family established The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at the Brigham, where today, Gillian's strength drives a relentless pursuit to transform how we prevent, treat, and recover from traumatic injury, the leading cause of death for people ages 44 and younger in the United States.

The Stepping Strong Center unites healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community members to revolutionize trauma care and rebuild lives. Here's how:

  • Fuel Research: We support clinical studies and collaborative projects that accelerate solutions and improve trauma patient outcomes
  • Reimagine Care: We embrace the latest research to redefine best practices and transform trauma care for survivors
  • Advance Education: We train the next generation of trauma leaders and empower the public to respond to trauma
  • Inspire Advocacy: We champion trauma survivors and injury prevention by raising awareness, supporting policy iniatives, and improving public safety
When you support a member of the Stepping Strong Boston Marathon Team, you're helping us turn tragedy into hope for civilian and military heroes who have suffered devestating traumatic injuries. As a solely philanthropically funded center, we depend on generous donations like yours to sustain our life-changing programs and iniatives.

Thank you for supporting this extraordinary group of runners and continuing to honor the Boston Strong spirit that still defines our city today. Learn more about the Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation at the Brigham: www.bwhsteppingstrong.org.
