Chasing My Six Star Dream
I’ve run 37 marathons and have a personal goal of completing all 6 World Major Marathons. I was chosen to represent Stepping Strong and run with a purpose on April 21, 2025 as part of the Boston Marathon team. In my own work as an oncology nurse, I see trauma every day in my patients and their caregivers. Stepping Strong has a message and a purpose I already stand behind as I see my own patients benefit from trauma-informed care which addresses the mental and emotional needs of my patients.
Needless to say oncology nursing comes with perils. I began running in the early 2000's for my mental health to relieve the stress I experience as an oncology nurse. Through running I've helped myself improve not only my physical fitness but my mental health. I also use my marathon running to connect with patients as they participate in their own marathon journey of cancer treatment. I often parallel my patients cancer treatment with a marathon- it takes much training and dedication even on days when you don't want to get up and face it.
In May 2022, I stepped away from running to donate my kidney to a friend with polycystic kidney disease. The recovery period following the kidney donation disrupted my training routine, but it was worth the disruption to help my friend. I wasn’t going to let this stop me- much like my patients don’t let their treatment hold them back. I’m inspired daily by patients to keep training hard as I watch them fight hard against their cancer. Three weeks postoperatively, I began training for the London marathon. How in the world was I going to be able to run a marathon in 4 months? The human body can do amazing things, but my mind was much stronger than my body! I successfully completed the London marathon in October 2022 (my 3rd World Major Marathon). I ran my 4th World Major Marathon in September 2023 in Berlin, Germany. In March 2024, I had the opportunity to complete my 5th World Major Marathon in Tokyo, Japan. Just as my patients have goals of completing their cancer treatments and beating their cancer, I have a similar goal of completing my 6th World Major in Boston 2025.
