POPI’s Mission:
In what's become the deadliest drug epidemic in our country's history, opioid use has claimed the lives of more Americans than were killed in the entire Vietnam War. In 2021 alone, over 80,000 people lost their lives to opioid-related overdose.
In the United States, chronic pain is a significant public health problem that affects over 100 million people and produces an estimated annual cost of about $635 billion.
The mission of the Brigham Health Program in Opioid and Pain Innovation (POPI) is to lead the evolution of research in pain management and opioid use disorder treatment within the U.S. and around the world.
