On September 2nd, I got a call from my brother in the midst of a heart attack. That moment changed not only his life but my families lives. We are grateful to the care he has received while at Brigham and Woman's hospital from the heart failure team. Today marks 37 days that he has been hospitalized waiting for a heart. This journey has been the hardest I have ever faced, watching my big brother go through such heartache...literally. Every morning he wakes up to a blood draw and a chest xray that begin at 5am. His day is a series of calculated routines which are daunting and never ending all while waiting and watching the clock. Every night I set my phone beside my pillow praying it might be the night I get the call from him that a heart is waiting with his name on it. He knows, as he's been told he can likely only survive one surgery. Hes got one chance! He is fighting for his life!
Anyone that knows Pete knows he has a dry sarcastic sense of humor. His eyebrow raises make me laugh just typing this. I was once told its not easy to always be positive but to find things to be grateful for. In this horrific roller coaster of a journey my family is on, I am grateful how it has brought us together. You find strength in one another. You see the kindness of strangers. My brother has this wonderful x-ray tech who we may owe the moon to! She drove 2 hours to singing beach to take photos of the beach for Pete. She told him " you took a beach trip today." She showed him the beach and a chair that she set up for him. He cried for days over it. There is good in this world...there are wonderful people. Many who we have met at BWH.
On 3/21 at 5am we received a call that a match had been found. Pete called it "3-2-1 blast off!" I loved it! We had been very private about our battle and what was going on. It was the day or two before that we posted on FB the 10k fundraiser for brigham and we expressed what our family was up against. Call it what you want but I like to think the power of prayer and positivity was sent into the universe. To say Thank you to the donor, their family, and the hospital seems far to simple. The gift that was given to my brother and to our family goes beyond anything measurable. Next time you see a small heart on a drivers license know that heart might just be a symbol to you but it's a beacon of hope, life, love, and gratitude to someone else.
