Bernardo's Fundraising Page
Last October, in the midst of a pandemic, BWH doctors, nurses, and staff removed a tumor and got me on my feet and out the door two days later. After living in and around Boston for over fifteen years, I felt super confident that BWH would take care of me, and I was right. And as challenging as that experience was, it was really a privilege to be treated by the world's best medical providers.
But the feeling of privilege lingered, and grew complicated. I realized that with a good job and good health insurance, I had access to the best care... and could afford the high premiums and high co-pays that came with it. I also learned about the racial and ethnic inequities prevalent in health care, particularly for Black people diagnosed with cancer.
So, as I considered a return to fitness after completing six months of chemotherapy, I decided to commit to running the B.A.A. 10k, recruit some friends, and raise money with BWH to help address these health care inequities. All funds we raise will go towards BWH's Community Health General Fund, which supports the BWH Center for Community Health and Health Equity (CCHHE). Through the CCHHE, BWH advances programs and initiatives that squarely target these inequities, including a colorectal cancer screening program run through BWH's two community health centers in underserved and at-risk communities.
I'm excited to be running again, and I appreciate your support!
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH) care for patients across New England, throughout the United States, and from 120 countries around the world. Every day, our clinicians, researchers, and caregivers work to find new ways to predict, prevent, and treat the most challenging diseases of our time while delivering world-class care with a profoundly human touch. Our Brigham 10K Teammates are proud to fuel quality patient care, innovative training, and life-changing discoveries that will benefit patients here in Boston and around the world, all in support of an area that is meaningful to them.
