Why I’m fundraising

I am so grateful to connect with fellow preemie moms in the Boston community. When I heard of the wonderful work that Alex Biega and “Friends of Lily” are doing in order to help donate onesies to the smallest warriors in the Brigham and Women’s NICU, I was inspired to trade my Danskos back for my running shoes for the first time since the arrival of my preemie twins. Our journey started in the summer of 2022 when a single embryo split into 2. By 18 weeks, my Mo/Di twins developed twin-twin transfusion syndrome and twin anemia-polycythemia sequence. While prepping for a possible in utero selective fetoscopic laser procedure, we also learned that twin A (Eloise) had a severe form of CHD known as Teralogy of Fallot with severe pulmonary stenosis and left pulmonary artery dysplasia. Fortunately we avoided the procedure, but required several inpatient stays for fetal monitoring to make sure the TTTS/TAPS did not progress and that both severely growth restricted twins (0%ile) could grow as much as possible. On top of that, I developed pre-eclampsia, which is not shocking given everything else going on and that I’m an OBGYN. Thanks to excellent care from our MFM team at BWH and the fetal care team at BCH, Eloise and Charlotte were safely delivered at just over 3lbs each. They were able to share 3 special weeks together at the Brigham NICU until Eloise went into cardiogenic shock and was transferred to Boston Children’s for a cardiac intervention. If it were not for the advocacy of the Brigham NICU team, I can guarantee she would not have been transferred in time for this life saving intervention. The Brigham NICU nurses spoiled sweet Charlotte while I was across the bridge monitoring Eloise’s recovery, which was complicated by a stroke and a pulmonary hemorrhage. I could not be more grateful for the Brigham NICU nurses who have become a forever part of our family. Both Eloise and Charlotte are now thriving 3 year olds who love to visit their mom on call with a stop on the 6th floor to visit their favorite NICU nurses and steal their Ritz crackers. They will no doubt be there on race day cheering on team Friends of Lily as they raise money for the BWH NICU.
